His automotive photography technique has since move another level up and his shoots these days are suitable for magazines' cover!

Absolutely agree, last year he did a calendar of our car for a few friends.... it was really gorgeous stuff....

Honestly his photography nowadays is better than many photos that I see in local magazines these days!

Hi Harold,

I looked through your friend's website. I think he is a good photographer. His subjects of buildings & night scene quite good.

But I also notice one fundamental composition area of improvement for his car photography. Its also applicable to human photography as well. If you don't mind me pointing out. For non centered subject shot, usually its better to have more background at where the subject is pointing to, in many of his car photos, its the other way round, its evident in the the first photo as well.

Looking at the first photo, the picture focus seems to be draw towards the high beam on the suspension bridge than the Porsche (unless that's the intention, if so then fine).

A good example will be the picture below.
Image

Also looking at another example. The car is just off set to the right of the screen, & the paning lines give a sense of speed. It give the impression it is moving towards the centre of the screen in the very next instant.
Image
Imagine now the car is offset in the screen more towards the left. Can you imagine the next instant some part of the car will be off screen, so the impression isn't as natural.

There of of course instances where we wanted more background to the back of the subject. Below is one example.
Image
The foreground biker seem to be pictured not classical off center to the right (due to him pointing left), but careful examination, you can see the photo draw you from the biker n the foreground from the left, to the background biker to the right side of the screen.

In the end, for every rule, there are exceptions, at the end of the day, the photography should be able to convey the message & draw the viewer to where the photographer wanted, and in all, create a strong photograph.

Anyway, I wanted you to know, I am not trying to take anything away from your friend. He is no doubt a good photographer, & way better than me now, What I drew is from my experiences in art ( I am a hobbyist artist) & composition. I just feel there is just one little bit I manage to spot & hopefully he can become even better.

Cheers.

The photography is good. Nice choice of background & car, is the focus on the car or wall sculpture at the back?. It would be better (IMO) if the 500 backside faced the camera instead, IMO. Also notice the front wheel is turned towards the glass wall!
Image

This is a very good photo, which is classical composition. The photo start by leading you from the car, towards the dimishing track, giving you a sense of motion, & left no doubt the star is the car. There is just a small issue, the front wheel is tilted, which suggest it is turning instead of going straight. Its common practice to turn the wheel to face camera, but in this instance, I feel its better to be straighten.
Image

Anyway, all these are my own opinion, maybe right, maybe wrong, & I don't expect everyone to agree, but I voice this out hoping your friend can view this in an objective way.

Cheers.

Mate, you have a very interesting point and I actually feel the same.... the car being on the left in the pic of my porker feel unnatural and seems to stimulate the left side of the brain and unnaturally feels like the car is not meant to be the main topic.

Very interesting that you suggest that the vehicle, if placed on the left of that pic would actually have looked more correct... I actually tend to agree... thanks for the input...

Again mate I absolutely see your point.... and actually agree with you on these two pics. I feel that you have really been studying this art carefully. Definitely want to get into it at some stage soon. Will tee you up with another buddy of mine, Jon who recently went to the Mille Milglia and covered the entire event with photographs. I myself have no good camera yet but want to learn composition etc before deciding if and when I will invest in a good SLR.
